The second Black student-athlete organization in this week’s Org Shoutout is coming out of Durham, North Carolina at Duke University, UBA!
The mission of UBA, or the United Black Athletes, is to form a unified body of black student-athletes who are committed to advocating for justice and equality in the realm of Duke athletics and the Durham community. UBA recognizes and supports the contribution of black student-athletes at Duke University & seeks to create an uplifting community for them. They create a space for conversation and relationship-building among athletes with a common identity, while also bridging a gap between black athletes and students.
This past year, United Black Athletes hosted a bowling mixer, a SuperBowl party, and in late Spring initiated a Zoom event for the entire athletic department-- administration, coaches, staff, trainers, and all varsity team members–– to discuss racial justice. The Zoom event turned out to be a huge success with over 500 participants on the call. UBA is continuing to push for racial justice advocacy and reform with their institution.
UBA is doing great work at Duke University and is setting the example of how to engage the community not only through entertaining events but also socially relevant events. Check UBA out on Instagram @duke.uba and Twitter @UnitedDuke.
